Sixth Grade 2009-2010
April 2010 . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The sixth graders are glad to be back from spring break and Easter break. Several of the sixth graders went to Manhattan to watch the Raiders play at the state basketball during their spring break. In Religion, the 6th graders are drawing crosses and learning the Stations of the Cross. The class took a test over the Beatitudes and did fantastic. Right now they are learning about their family background. In reading, they just finished reading creative stories and are beginning to write one themselves. In Science, they are learning about waves. All of the sixth graders are going out for track and have done well at their first two track meets. Math assessments are completed and now they are working on Jeopardy Boards. By Madison Koch – 2010 April Trojan Tribune

In religion, the sixth graders are learning about Advent and its meaning. They also made Christmas cards for the veterans. The students are researching Egypt and Egyptian pyramids. They also are learning how Egyptians wrapped and embalmed mummies in Social Studies. The class compared and indentified the physical characteristics of Kansas to the regions of the U.S., as PowerPoints. English students are writing and classifying pattern 4 and 5 sentences and writing persuasive paragraphs. They’ve been studying metric units in math class. They’re working on some geometry also. Daily and weekly word problems are part of assignments. In science, they’re studying bacteria, viruses, and diseases. The students just finished an infectious disease PowerPoint and are ready to begin making models of a virus cell. The sixth graders had a good Thanksgiving break but are glad to be back in school.

So far it had been a very busy year for the sixth graders. The sixth graders have taken a total of four tests so far. The first test they had was in religion class with Mrs. Kramer. With Mrs. Kramer being as nice as she is let them have an open book quiz over the things they have learned throughout the years so they could find out where they should start with religion. The sixth graders did a great job on their religion test! Congrats!
Mrs. Uphaus has the privilege of teaching the students social studies and math. In social studies, the students are learning about one ancient civilization in particular…the Egyptians. They took a test in this class that consisted of what they had learned about the Egyptians, pyramids, mummies (that was their favorite part) and the Mesopotamian civilization. Then, in math class they have been studying how to multiply and estimate with decimals. They have also taken a test over decimals and all got a passing grade and did very well.
In science, the things most of the students are looking forward to would have to be dissecting cow’s eyes. So far in science, they have written a lab report over the bubble gum experiment they did and have worked with Mrs. Haverkamp on improving their typing skills. Some students say they would prefer typing on cell phones or instant messaging on the computer. The students have also taken a test in science.
The student’s homeroom teacher, Mrs. Kramer, is very happy and excited to see how the year will turn out, she says the sixth graders are a very creative bunch and are good learners and obedient students. They are now beginning to prepare for a narrative story they will be writing for English. They have just finished reading Maniac McGee. They have been reviewing this story by doing lab pages and taking reading notes, which they all enjoy!
The sixth graders were very excited because they finished their Iowa Testing. The students prepared for them by eating good breakfasts and getting good sleep. They are now awaiting the results. Good Luck! They hope to do good so Mrs. Kramer will reward them with a treat.
In music, the students are learning and reciting new songs for church and taking tests over music signs and symbols. They have done wonderful so far this year!! In P.E. the students have enjoyed or should I say loved having classes again with Mr. Atwood this year. They have played games, such as dodge ball, even with the volleyball nets up. They have also played volleyball and beach volleyball. The students all agree P.E. is their favorite class of the day!!
The students are most looking forward to passing their A.R. goals and just passing the sixth grade. They are also very excited for “All Souls Day” better known as “Halloween”. Dalton would like to be a cowgirl while the girls are considering being football players. One girl would like to be a bridezilla. Michael Love would love to be the blue power-ranger.
Most of all the children unanimously said that the locker rooms, the gym, and the cafeteria were their most favorite things about the new school. Have fun this year sixth grade and teachers!! By Logan Haverkamp
