Second Grade 2009-2010

April 2010 . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The second graders have been working very hard. For Math, they have been working on many things, like pictographs, subtraction, place value blocks, and money. In reading, they have read some great stories, and have finished the theme “Friends”. They have also read some stories about the Last Supper and Easter. Sentences and dictionary skills are what they have been working on in English. For religion, they have learned about the Stations of the Cross and the Apostles Creed. Also, they are excited for their First Communion and have been preparing eagerly for the day. Weighing objects and studying the layers of the earth are things they are doing in Science.  During their computer time, they have worked on Kidspiration, keyboarding, abcya.com, spellingcity.com, and funschool.com.

For Lent, some of them gave up things like pop, candy, gum, TV, the computer, or eating between meals.  But others are doing good deeds, like chores for their parents, cleaning their room , or being nice to their siblings.

They have been making some great crations in art, and have recently made some Easter baskets.  They also have been doing some Easter activities, including making Resurrection Rolls with the eighth graders.  They are having a great school year and are very busy.      By Lisa Olberding     April Trojan Tribune

The second grade loves this time of year. They are doing a lot of activities celebrating Advent and preparing for the birth of Jesus.  Everyday they add an ornament to the Jesse Tree that they have hanging up in their homeroom. In English, they are learning how to write friendly letters; therefore, since it is Christmas time they are writing cards to one another.  On the 15th, they are going to the Crestview Nursing Home to play Bingo with the residents. Christmas is a fun time for them, and they are dreaming big.  Some of the things the second graders want for Christmas are legos, an I Pod, a flat screen TV, video games, and an easy bake oven.

Taken from the October Trojan Tribune Newsletter:

In religion, the second graders have been talking about bible stories, patron saints, the gospels, and the difference between archangels and guardian angels.

They’ve learned how to tell time to the nearest hour and half hour, adding doubles and doubles plus one, reading graphs, and solving story problems in math.

The kids like naming parts in different kinds of sentences. They are reading many stories about fish in their “Fish” reading theme.”

In social studies, they are studying compasses, maps,  globes, and different directions.

The class won the pizza party for  “Pennies at the Park”.  They were excited and ready to head to the Omaha Zoo on Wednesday,  October 7th.

The second graders have been working very hard and are glad to be back in school!          By   Melissa Nordhus
