First Grade 2009-2010

April 2010 . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The first graders have been a very busy class lately. They prepared for Easter by learning about everyone’s favorite, the Easter bunny, but more importantly learning about Jesus and how he rose from the dead. Before Easter is Lent, which was a challenge for the little ones. They had to give up some of their favorite things like pop tarts, Spongebob, candy, and the Wii. One child even wanted to give up school, but that plan didn’t go too well. The whole school gave up talking at lunch on Fridays, which was even more of a challenge for the little chatterboxes. As they prepared for Easter, they made many art projects. They made Easter lilies, Easter eggs, and Easter baskets for the all-important Easter bunny. During Holy Week, the first graders wore sunglasses to be spies on Wednesday as a reminder of when Judas spied on Jesus. On Thursday, they attended the Living Stations, which were fun for the kids to see in action, what Jesus did being acted out.  On Good  Friday, they didn’t have school in remembrance of the day Jesus died.  Over break many of the kids enjoyed coloring Easter eggs and spending time with their family on Easter.   After coming back from Easter break, they discovered the Easter bunny had come and filled their baskets.  But the Easter bunny was being sneaky and hid the baskets from the kids.  Now that Easter is over, the first graders are looking forward to one thing.   SUMMER !  Before that, they have to finish first grade, which won’t be a problem for these bright kids.     By Kacie Steinlage    April 2010  Trojan Tribune

December Trojan Tribune Newsletter . . . . . . .

The 1st graders are busy as they near the Christmas season. They have been making turkeys, Christmas trees, and a model of the house that Jesus lived in. They have also been writing letters to Saint Nicholas, their Advent angels and most importantly, their Christmas lists to Santa Claus. The children wish for a Barbie camper, a combine, an electric guitar, a K-State jersey, Webkinz, bumblebee the transformer, a MP3 player that plays movies, a kite, a spy kit, DS games, and a Wii. Even though they have been getting ready for the holidays they have still been working hard on their schoolwork. In religion, they have been learning what Jesus ate when he was alive. The 1st grades listed yogurt, bread, cheese, pomegranates, and fish. He always ate with his hands and always broke his bread. Sometimes he would play on the roof of the house. He was also allowed to bring animals, like cows and sheep into the house.   The 1st graders have exciting news to share about Garret Bennett and his Dad making a generator.  The generator worked!  In math, the children have been learning how to add, subtract measure line segments,  find the cemetery of a shape,  make pairs, count money, spell the numbers, tell time, and count by 2’s.  To prepare for the advent season, the 1st graders have made Advent calendars and crowns to count down the days until Christmas.  The 1st graders have also been learning the sign of the cross in different languages and so far have accomplished Spanish, German, Polish, and are working on French.

In religion, the first graders have started God’s Hour in which they made a creation book. All of the students were excited for school to start. They were ready to start collecting insects and spiders, learn math, and study phonics.

They said, “We enjoy collecting insects because they are fun to watch.” The preying mantis got out the other day and was on the crucifix praying! Braden Bramhall and Gavin Gudenkauf are the funniest ones in the class. In math, they made a more than and less than train. They also have been learning addition and subtraction.
“Spelling is what I enjoy,” said Nathan Deters. “We have learned some words too.” The first graders enjoy Sister Delores, because she is nice and funny. “We love the chips and sandwiches at lunch,” they all said. The students told us that they started making sticker books. They love doing art. Some projects they have done are make bugs out of egg cartons and paint spider webs.
“Do you like our weeds?”  asked Damon Koch.  “We found them and brought them in.”   At recess, they love to play kickball in the parking lot.  Sister Delores says that they are doing really well at playing kickball.   Nathan Deters, Shayla Hammes, and  Myiah Schmelzle have all lost teeth so far this year.   All of the first graders enjoyed Grandparent’s Day.   They all loved the cinnamon rolls and having their grandparents come and eat with them.    By  Madison Koch  and  Janie Bramhall
