Fifth Grade 2009-2010

April  2010 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The 5th graders have been very busy. They have already taken the Kansas Math and Reading Assessment. They are enjoying serving at mass.   The 5th graders are enjoying the sunny weather and love to go play outside and soak up some sun. They wanted either KU or K-state to win March Madness. Seven people in the class loved the way the Big 12 ended with KU winning. Maggie Hammes won2nd place in the conservation contest!  Many people in 5th grade enjoyed spring break by going on vacation. They have done many different art projects for Easter, such as, “What would Jesus do?” crosses, and “Alleluia” signs. All of them are getting really close to their A.R. goals. Their pancake breakfast was very successful. They raised $900 in cash and $25 in personal care products !  In religion, they are learning about the resurrection of Jesus.   They are learning about life during the war.   They started growing an amaryllis plant during Lent, but it  just now started growing.  Most of the children went to their grandparent’s house for Easter.  All the fifth graders are looking forward to summer and hopes it’ll come soon.    By Janie Bramhall   April  2010   Trojan Tribune

The fifth graders are off to several interesting activities this month. They have already begun to study the 13 original colonies. The majority vote of their favorite colony to learn about so far was Jamestown. They very much enjoy doing Accelerated Reader.  They also learned how to serve for mass, and they enjoy it very much. Keep up the good work! In religion, the students have been learning many different things about our faith, but recently they have been learning about the rosary.  They took a test over the rosary and are excited to see how well they did. Art class is the best time of the day.  The students say they enjoy it very much! They have been making many crafts such as snowmen and glowing crosses. The first snow day they played on sleds, built snowmen, played games inside, and also shoveled snow. That one snow day made them so excited and definitely made them ready for Christmas. They would like many things for Christmas, but will be happy with what they get.  Recently the 14 out of 17 children that are partaking in band had a Christmas concert at the high school that their parents and teacher enjoyed. They were so excited about the great turnout.  Mrs. Haverkamp has the privilege of teaching the fifth graders science.  She has been teaching them about water cycles and clouds.  The thing the students most enjoy is working on laptops and making graphs.  Recently, they have been working on a Christmas project at  www.santa.net that has been teaching them about how different countries in the world celebrate Christmas.  The students have just finished learning pattern one sentences in English.   The 5th grade students that will be participating in the 2009 Geography Bee are Maggie Hammes and Peyton Wilhelm.  The alternate is Anthony Esslinger.

They are very glad to participate in the Monarchs in Space activity.  The smallest caterpillars are ready for their cocon.   The caterpillar already in the cocoon fell.   One caterpillar isn’t in its cocoon.  They hang in a J instead of a C.  They are very  excited about Ms. Haugsness saying she might let them fly around the room when they are butterflies!  Have a wonderful year fifth grade.

The fifth grade has been enjoying school this year. They are about to have their first reading test. They are having fun doing spelling and S.S.R. Study time is something that they like and enjoy. They all have started on A.R. with some kids already to their 10% mark! Fourteen out of seventeen kids are out for band, and they are really enjoying it a lot. They really love being in the new school, the field trips that they get to go on, and having science as a subject. Some of their favorite activities are art, spelling, and especially science. Beginning the new school year they were excited, but still felt like staying home. They all had a blast at Grandparent’s Day. Almost everyone went to the first game in the home gym. They had lots of fun!!! Three things that they really like about the new school are the gym, the library, and the lunchroom.  During summer break, half of the class went on vacation somewhere to a different state. Some of them went to Worlds of Fun!!!!    Some classmates, of course, went swimming at the Seneca Aquatic Pool.    They say that the teachers are really nice and fun.   Anthony Esslinger is really happy because he got a foreign exchange student this summer.   Brandon Haverkamp expresses his feelings about the new school.  Brandon quotes, “This school ROCKS!!”              By      Michelle A.
